Joseph Schlitz Brewing Co. : A Chronological History

Was the Simon J. Meister Brewery the old Krug Brewery?

edited and written by Michael R. Reilly, copyright 1995

Simon J. Meister operated a brewery from 1860-1868, making Weiss beer and "syphon" (a mildly alcoholic, heavy brown beer for women and children). The building in which the brewery was housed stood at 406 Chestnut (W. Juneau Ave.) across from Gipfel’s Brewery. It was razed during the 1970’s to make way for the I-694 (Park East) freeway spur. He had a capacity rated at 450 barrels a year, boasted of two employees and a monthly payroll of $50.00. The brewery (pictured above) was built of Cream City brick in 1853. The stepped gable-end parapets are of the Post-Federal style, while the six octagonal windows under the cornice suggest the rising influence of Victorian taste. This information and picture were obtained from Jeff Heun 's website at http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/bistro/3226/
