100 years ago 1914

Nineteen sailors were killed and 72 injured in a battle with Mexico. The USS battleships Utah, Florida and Prairie, and their auxiliaries bombarded Veracruz and Tampico, Mexico, over the dictatorship of General Huerta. The U.S. wants him to resign.

Meanwhile, in one day in the town of Lisbon, the temperature varied 60 degrees on a weekend.

The eighth annual meeting of the Waukesha County Historical Society will be held in the county seat.

50 years ago 1964

The Sussex VFW Auxiliary has a new president, Shirley Zimmermann, and Dorothy Ries is the chaplain.

Topsoil of six yards screened can be delivered in Sussex for $15.

Nick Quarto is the Lannon village president.

Hamilton electors will go to the polls again as the school board asks for emergency aid scaled back down to $995,000 from $1,200,000, as the schools are busting at the seams with 225 additional students next year at Hamilton.

25 years ago 1989

Hamilton High has had a series of great discus throwers, and this year they won the conference relays. In the conference outdoor meet, Jim Beckman was first, Steve Schwengel was third and Jerry Wetherall was fifth.

Margaret Farrow, a Republican, is running to represent the 33rd District as state senator.

Bernice Harris is the Sussex post master.

Matt Unertl was the boy's MVP at the annual Sussex Hershey youth track meet.

The Tammy Rocker fiasco at the Sussex Senior Citizen Center is attracting a lot of pro and con letters to the editor in the Sun and lots of discussion.

The annual run of the Pewaukee River to Frame Park in Waukesha attracted 131 paid entrants. It is held the last Saturday in April and many locals often enter it.

Sussex is studying above-ground residential pools and trying to come up with an ordinance to regulate them.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Bradley R. Barbuch, son of Lisbon's Richard and Mary Barbuch, is a military basic training instructor for the U.S. Air Force.

After pitching in 3 games, Stephanie Klees has an earned run average of 0.00 for the 2009 Hamilton girls varsity softball team.


100 YEARS AGO 1914

There are 98,000,000 people living in the USA, and Milwaukee has 417,084.

Right Cut chewing tobacco costs 10 cents a box.

In Lannon Mr. Alvin Reis is giving a lecture at the Village School titled, "Cause, Cost of Tuberculosis."

Meanwhile, Mrs. Amelia Thiery has opened her ice cream parlor in Lannon for the coming season.

50 years ago 1964

Francis Beaudry, the first Hamilton School Board president, is asking for votes as he vies for the 9th District House of Representatives' seat as a Democrat. The primary will be in September.

Sussex defeated Lannon in Land O' Lakes baseball 5-2, with Don Clary getting three hits. Jerry Tetzlaff was the winning pitcher for Sussex. This follows on a 2-0 win by Tetzlaff late last year.

The Sussex assessor is Eugene Kersten.

25 years ago 1989

At the recent annual Lisbon town meeting, 80 people were present. Joe Marchese was a jumping jack, as he was up and down, presenting several resolutions, most failing, but stirring up a goodly amount of discussion. Eventually he made a resolution to hold the Lisbon budget to a 4 percent increase, which passed.

Martha (nee Krueger) Manke, 87, died this past month. She once was a supervisor at Mammoth Spring Canning Co.

10 years ago 2004

Lisbon has OK'd the process of Hamilton High School and Templeton Middle School getting municipal water from Sussex. Meanwhile Lisbon is studying a proposal of Sussex extending sidewalks toward Hamilton and Templeton.

The Pauline Haass Library gave its volunteer of the year award to Betty Skaug.

The Hamilton "Old Hollywood" spring prom will be at Mequon Country Club.

Seth Kroenke went 4 for 5 as the Sussex Land O' Lakes baseball team's season got under way with a 6-2 win over Menomonee Falls. Meanwhile Scott Hagen had a grand slam home run to lead the Lannon LOL team to a narrow 7-6 win over Hartland.

The Pauline Haass Library has named Juanita Lake as the 2009 volunteer of the year.


100 years ago 1914

The Whittaker Lumber Co. will be furnishing the lumber for a large crusher plant to be erected in Lannon by the Davis Stone Co. The contract requires more than 20 carloads of lumber. John W. Vierck has the contract to erect the crusher plant.

The Lannon Eagle Hotel will have a new paint job.

50 years ago 1964

A gallon jar of dill pickles sells for $1.

The emergency Hamilton bond issue has passed by basically the same number of votes that defeated it last June. Again Butler was the only negative vote, 237 no and 34 yes. All other districts voted for the bond issue.

Ray Schuster, 50, a former quarry worker, but better known as a basketball ref, has died.

25 years ago 1989

As part of the Arbor Day festivities in Sussex Village President Paul Fleischman and Village Administrator Dave Anderson planted a pine tree in Village Park. This past year 300 trees were planted in the park. A sidelight was a plantation of Dutch-elm-disease-resistant seedlings that were planted in a nursery, hopefully to be transplanted 10 years from now. (All of them eventually died of Dutch elm disease.)

Sussex's Grandma Gwen Waring got a tom turkey in Adams County, coming in at 22 pounds. She used a 20-gauge shotgun, and in the past three years she also has had success. Her husband Jim cleaned the tom and son Steve got an 18-pounder during the hunt.

Judy and bob Jones were married May 2, 1964, and celebrated their 40th anniversary.

The new no smoking rules in workplaces has been met with a split decision among local taverns, as it seems more people like it, over a much smaller group that disapproves. M&M restaurant owner Dean Babbit's comment was, "minimal effect on business."

Dan Thompson and Nicole Jurasovich are the king and queen of the Hamilton spring prom.


100 years ago 1914

W. Whitehead of Lisbon delivers milk to local users. He has an advertizing sentence, "No bottles out, no milk."

Boys' caps for spring cost 50 cents to $1, while men's fedoras cost $1 to $3 at the Menomonee Falls Annex.

In a tragedy, 17-year-old Leland Funk of Merton was killed when he was caught in the carriage of a circular saw.

50 years ago 1964

Hamilton High School will hold a comprehensive summer school for district youth. There will be a price of $5 for each class taken.

St. John's Lutheran Church held confirmation on May 26th for 19 youths. The pastor of the Lannon church is Rev. L. Hallauer.

Gary Joecks, 19, of Lannon was seriously hurt in a car accident in nearby Germantown.

Jim Stracka is the track coach at Hamilton.

25 years ago 1989

The Sussex Lions Club had a big club shindig as they celebrated their 50th anniversary with 239 people attending. The event was held at the Quilted Bear in Germantown, which is owned by Lions members.

This past month Bob and Judy Jones celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

Hamilton has its fifth straight conference championship in girls fast-pitch softball.

John Decker of Sussex, a Hamilton High student, has accepted an appointment to the Air Force Academy.

The Hamilton girls track team took the team gold in the West Allis Hale Invitational. Hamilton took firsts in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays, plus an individual championship by Maggie Ray in the shotput.
