100 years ago 1914

The 78-acre farm that was once owned by Civil War veteran James Moyes, and is today the Sussex Village Park, is occupied by the Martkoph farm. This farm sells some of its milk to Sussex housewives as the farm bottles part of its milk production.

50 years ago 1964

Horace Moran, the boys basketball coach at Hamilton High School, has eight returning letter winners, Don Loertscher, Bill Kallio, Tom Halleran, Jim Basting, Dennis Dahlke, Mike Lewis, Dan Gruelich and Gary Bennett. Loertscher and Gruelich were the team's leading scorers the year before.

There were 375,000 licensed deer hunters during the recent season. The estimated population of deer in Wisconsin is about half a million.

25 years ago 1989

During the recent fall, it is estimated that 2,000 hunters zeroed in their rifles at the Lisbon-based Hillside Road Menomonee Fall Gun Club.

Steve Frantl is the assistant Hamilton girls basketball coach, with Vance Forrest the returning head coach.

According to state Rep. Lolita Schneiders, who represents Sussex, Lisbon and Lannon, 85 percent of people polled support mandatory recycling.

The Sussex Village Board had approved a 120-foot-high storage building for Quad Graphics. It will have a 54,000-square-foot base over 1 acre.

The Lisbon Fire Department received a $118,500 grant, according to U. S. Sen. Russ Feingold.

Hamilton football player Jeremy Duell is on the all-Lake Country football team for offense.

R. J. Youngbauer is an assistant boys basketball coach at Hamilton. Meanwhile, Andy Cerroni is in his fourth year as the head coach.

Dan Carey is the new Hamilton girls basketball coach.

Eric Reimer has earned all-state honors at inside linebacker as he was a star player for the Hamilton Chargers.

Lisbon has approved, for a fee, a plan that will allow organizations to rent the Lisbon Fire Department meeting room for special occasions.

Doug Brahm, a Lisbon firefighter since 1981, in the chief of the department.

100 years ago 1914

The major land owners of what is today the Thousand Oaks Subdivision are William Brown (Brown's Woods), the John Butler estate and Jacob Stier. This land mass was often used as a picnic area. Immediately north of the Stier property is a small area owned by the Bug Line Railroad.

50 years ago 1964

Last year, Wisconsin hunters got 61,000 deer during the hunting season.

Armed bandits "cleaned out the till" at Adelman's Laundry in Menomonee Falls.

The first senior Hamilton boys basketball team won its first game of the season, a 68-45 victory over Slinger. Three players were in double figures: Jim Bastings, Dan Gruelich and Don Loertscher.

Henry Kranz of North Lisbon Road in the town of Lisbon passed away at the age of 63, dying Nov. 22, 1964. He was a wood worker.

25 years ago 1989

During the recent deer hunt, Jeff Mamerow got his fourth buck in a row while hunting in Lisbon.

Charles Erickson, the Butler Administrator, has been chosen as the new Sussex Administrator.

Dilly's is advertising a $6.75 New York steak dinner.

In the recent deer hunt, Paul Pichler of Lisbon used a World War II German Mauser military rifle to shoot an eight-point buck at Pelican Lake (192 pounds).

A county-wide Waukesha Fire Department is the suggestion of Waukesha County Executive Dan Finley. Sussex fire chief Corky Curtis would welcome the consolidation.

H&H Auto hosted a Sussex Fire Department extrication training session at its Waukesha Avenue car parts plant.

5 years ago 2009

Lisbon Public Works Director Mike Mueller is recommending that Plainview Drive and Lake Five Road be given top priority for road repairs.

Bruce John's house on Fox Hollow Drive in Lisbon was destroyed by a Thanksgiving Day fire. The Lisbon Fire Department is continuing its investigation into the cause. Some possessions in the basement were saved, even though the house was destroyed.

100 years ago 1914

On the Lake Five Road, the Haass family is well represented with two Georges, a Philip and a Henry owning 480 acres over its 3-mile stretch.

A Civil War veteran, Alfred Weaver, owns the farm on Waukesha Avenue where today one finds H&H Auto, across the highway from the Rose Hill Cemetery.

50 years ago 1964

After losing 17 straight Braveland Conference games, the Hamilton boys basketball finally got its first league win as it defeated Brookfield East 68-55 with Dennis Dahlke scoring 17 points.

Mothers at Hamilton are wrestling with the problem of their sons having torn shorts during judo exercises in physical education classes.

St. James Catholic School has asked if it can use the new Hamilton gym for its seventh- and eighth-grade basketball games. The question will be investigated.

25 years ago 1989

Last week, Charles Erickson, the administrator from Butler, was going to be the new Sussex administrator. However, after accepting the position, he withdrew from the $40,000 position.

The Lisbon Presbyterian Church on Hillside Road has a new, $20,000 Baldwin organ, replacing a 1947 model.

The cost of driver's education will increase to $200 at Hamilton High School.

10 years ago 2004

A Dec. 9 blast at Halquist Quarry echoes the previous year's Oct. 9 blast as it seemed to distort the aquifer and wells in the vicinity of North Lisbon Road and Quarry Road, and the adjacent subdivision. Some residents had muddy water coming from the faucets.

Lisbon is facing the problem of the "city is coming to the country," as more residential development is occurring; the town is reviewing 400 new lots.

Lannon had a traditional community Christmas tree lighting in front of the Lannon Village Hall. The civic community start-up Christmas party had children singing carols. The Lannon Lions picked up the cost of $500.

St. Alban's historic stone church is included in Milwaukee Magazine's list of the 25 most beautiful churches in greater Milwaukee.

100 years ago 1914

As World War I got its start in August 1914, the unincorporated twin villages of Sussex (started 1842-43) and Templeton (started 1886-87) were roughly half a mile apart, but they would grow together and one could say that the Methodist church was a sort of lynchpin. But it would take until 10 years later for the two to join into the incorporated village of Sussex and separate away from the town of Lisbon.

50 years ago 1964

Audrey Egerer, a Hamilton senior, has won a 1965 Bausch and Lomb Science Award, which makes her eligible for a science scholarship at the University of Rochester (New York).

25 years ago 1989

Jan Rude of Sussex has a collection of old "knuckle skinners" (food shredders). They are on a permanent prominent display in her kitchen and she said she is always looking for more.

Dan Meissner, a Lisbon farmer, is seeking to be elected to the Lisbon Town Board and to the Waukesha County Board of Supervisors.

David Roebke has been chosen as the Sussex Firefighter of the Year.

10 years ago 2004

Sussex resident Nick Ghlefi rolled his sixth career 300 game at Sussex Bowl.

There will be eight teams at the eighth annual Hamilton Alumni Tournament over the holidays, six boys teams and two girls teams. Tim Patterson is running the tournament.

The Sussex Chamber of Commerce presented Betty Mindemann with the "Outstanding Community Member Award."

Five historical buildings fall to the expansion of Highway 164, including the Lisbon Halfway House (Mike Spink's Saloon) and the Joe Marsden home, plus the Oak Ridge Pheasant Farm.

Ausblick Ski Hill (Mary Hill) in Lisbon has a good snow base for December skiing.

Six people are charged for graffiti on the Town Line and Highway 74 railroad bridge. The maximum penalty is nine months in jail. The sheriff's department caught the culprits in the act.

Marcus Paulson is declared the top area athlete for 2009 as he took first place in Division I state cross country in the fall for Hamilton High School.
