ProHealth Sussex clinic to expand

There are visible sign of ProHealth Care Medical Associates' (PHCMA) planned expansion of an 8,000-square-foot addition to its 11,000-square-foot clinic on Corporate Circle, near the intersection of Highways 164 and K, in Sussex. The expansion will create the space to accommodate additional primary and specialty care physicians, providing more health care options close to home for ProHealth Care's patients in the Sussex area.

"The additional specialists will complement the health care services already offered at our Sussex clinic to better serve our patients in Sussex and the surrounding communities," said Jim Lorence, PHCMA director of specialty services.

The expansion of specialty care may include cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, pulmonology and rheumatology. Health care services currently available at the Sussex PHCMA clinic include family practice, Ob/Gyn, orthopedics, surgery consultations, podiatry, ear, nose and throat (ENT), lab and diagnostic radiology.

The project has received approval from the Village of Sussex and is to be completed by spring of 2011.

Waukesha-based ProHealth Care Inc. has entered into an agreement to sell its ProHealth Care Medical Associates clinics and physician practices in Germantown, Hartford and Menomonee Falls to Froedtert & Community Health.

According to Sandra Peterson, spokeswoman for ProHealth Care the transaction will be finalized by the end of August and early September. Under the agreement, ProHealth Care also will sell its ownership portion of the ambulatory surgery center on the Community Memorial Hospital campus. The ambulatory center is currently owned jointly by ProHealth Care, Froedtert & Community Health and Aurora. The agreement includes the transfer of 51 ProHealth Care physician practices and approximately 400 staff to Froedtert. The ProHealth Care Medical Associates clinics including Germantown, Hartford, Town Hall Road in Menomonee Falls, Rehabilitation Services in Menomonee Falls and Behavioral Health Services in Menomonee Falls will all become part of Froedtert & Community Health as of Sept. 7. The Behavioral Health Services Clinic in Wauwatosa will close permanently on Sept. 7.

Patients will still be able to receive care from their current physician, and medical records will automatically transfer to Froedtert & Community Health in September. All other existing ProHealth Care Medical Associates locations and providers will remain part of the ProHealth Care system.

Medical Associates Health Centers, one of the most respected independent group practices in the Milwaukee metro area, celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2001. Medical Associates maintains the vision of its founders, who began planning the practice in 1961.

The six founders were residents who grew to know and respect each other while working at Milwaukee County General Hospital and the Milwaukee County Emergency Hospital. They were: Dr. Jack Hoffman, an internal medicine resident from the University of Ohio; Dr. Phil Dougherty, an internal medicine resident from the University of Illinois; Dr. John Riesch, a general surgery resident from the University of Wisconsin; Dr. John Foley, a general surgeon resident from Loyola of Chicago; Dr. Tom Hofbauer, an obstetrics and gynecology resident from Marquette Medical School; and Dr. Richard Bibler, a pediatric resident from the University of Indiana College of Medicine.

The group chose to open a clinic in Menomonee Falls for several reasons. It was already the home of Drs. Riesch and Dougherty. It had recently been labeled the fastest growing village in Wisconsin. There were already active plans to build a community hospital and there were no other practitioners in town with specialty training. Shortly after the decision was made, the other four physicians moved to Menomonee Falls and became active in the community.

The first office was a small three-room suite in the rear of the dental building of Dr. Eugene Gissal, which was near the corner of Menomonee and Appleton Avenues. One room was for waiting patients, the second for an examining room and the third for staff, lab and the coffeepot. In 1961, the usual charge for an office call was $4.00. A house call was $6.00. Since there was no local hospital and office facilities were limited, the doctors performed a great number of house calls. It was not unusual to see six to eight patients at home on a given day, including many of them at night.

It soon became apparent that the office was too small for a multi-specialty clinic. Medical Associates built its first office in 1963, which is now the location of M&I Bank, N82 W15401 W. Appleton Avenue. Community Memorial Hospital opened its first 60-bed unit in 1964. Medical Associates outgrew its new clinic almost as soon as it was completed. The group, then numbering about 20 physicians, started building a larger clinic across the street from the hospital shortly after it opened.

Since the 1960s, Medical Associates has continued to grow, adding its first satellite locations in the early 1980s. What originally was intended to be a group of 12 to 18 doctors is now five times the size. We now have over 100 physicians practicing in more than 25 medical specialties.
