In one letter to his wife Sarah, during the war, James complained the lice were so severe, he had to hold his breath and submerge himself in the Arkansaw River to drown the lice. Notes for JOHN R. SMALL:

Retta Small was the daughter of one of the "big four" politicians in Sussex, John R. Small. She was also the granddaughter of William Small, who gave land to Section 16 Church (Lisbon Presbyterian. John Small was one of the early owners of the old Sussex Mills. He and his family lived in the grout two-story house just north of Sussex Mills on Maple Ave. After leaving the mill, Small became the Milwaukee Railroad "Bug Line" depot agent."
