Harvey played baseball for Lannon in the Land-O-Lakes baseball league as a pitcher and an outfielder. In 1938/ he tried out for a pitcher position for the St Louis Cardinals, but was told he was too old at the age of 24. Harvey is a member of the baseball Land-O-Lakes Hall of Fame, voted in as a member in 1964. Also excelling in many other sports at Menomonee Falls high school, he earned letters in football, basketball, track and baseball. He joined the Lannon Fire Department in 1939 when his father was fire chief. Harvey served as assistant chief for eight years. He also served on the Sunnyside Cemetery board for many years.
